Women's Day 2024: March 8 is International Women's Day, a global celebration of women's rights and gender equality that aims to highlight the continued struggles that women confront across the globe. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about the feminist movement, gender equality issues, women's accomplishments across various fields, and the prevalence of violence and abuse against women.

International Women's Day History:

The history of International Women's Day dates back to 1909, when the Socialist Party of America established National Women's Day in New York on February 28, following city-wide demonstrations against garment workers. The following year, at the second International Congress of Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark, women's rights advocate Clara Zetkin proposed an international women's day to amplify women's demands for equal rights. The first celebration of International Women's Day took place in March 1911, with the date officially set as March 8 in 1913.

The United Nations officially marked International Women's Day in 1975 and declared March 8 as International Women's Day in 1977, recognising it as a day to celebrate women's rights and global harmony.

Since then, the UN has annually selected a theme for International Women's Day. Notably, in 1996, the UN announced the first annual theme, 'Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future.'

Significance of the Day:

The significance of International Women's Day lies in its goals to celebrate women's achievements and advance gender equity. It serves as a platform to promote gender equality by advocating for equal participation in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres, ensuring that all members of society have equal rights.
