New Delhi: With soaring temperatures in several parts of the country, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave conditions in many parts of the country for at least next five days.

A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued by the IMD for Delhi signifying that the weather could change for the worse and hence people should stay vigilant.

Since effects of heatwave on human health are not always immediately visible and obvious, they are not taken much in consideration but this does not hide the fact that heatwaves are among the most dangerous of natural hazards, says the World Health Organisation.

Therefore, it is very important to know the ways in which one can safeguard themselves and avert risk of any heatstroke.

What to do during a heatwave?

  • Keep a track of local news weather — listen to radio, read newspaper, watch television.

  • Keep yourself hydrated all the time. Drink lots of water even if you don't feel thirsty. Stay away from sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic drinks.

  • Have adequate water intake, in general, while eating meals and snacks throughout the day to replenish lost salts during sweating.

  • Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani, lemon water, buttermilk etc to keep yourself hydrated.

  • Wear loose cotton clothes that are lightweight and light coloured.

  • Always cover your head while going outdoors — wear a cap or take an umbrella.

  • Take care of your pets by keeping them under a shade and give them plenty of water to drink.

  • Never leave children, infants, older adults, person with disability or a pet unattended inside a parked car as cars can heat upto dangerous temperatures.

As per the IMD, heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Vidarbha, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh during the next five days; Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, interior Gangetic West Bengal, and interior Odisha from April 27 to 30; Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from April 28 to May 1; Bihar from April 27 to 29; Chhattisgarh from April 28 to 30; and northern parts of Gujarat on April 27 and 28.
