Shravan, also called Sawan, is a holy month for followers of Lord Shiva. It is the fifth month in the Hindu calendar when devotees worship Lord Shiva during the month asking for prosperity and happiness in life. It is believed that the person who observes fast every Monday during this month, gets all his wishes fulfilled with the blessings of Lord Shiva. This year, the month of Sawan starts from 14 July and will end on 12 August on Shravan Purnima.

There is a special relevance of performing Jalabhishek, Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva during the month. 'Abhishek’ is a sanskrit word. It is a method of worshiping God by bathing the idol with milk or water. Rudrabhishek means the consecration of Bhagwan Rudra, that is, the anointing of the Shivling with the mantra. Ardent devotees of Lord Shiva also called kanwariyas transport water from the sacred river to honour the Lord during Shravan.
