Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869. Lal Bahadur Shastri, another Indian leader and statesman, shares Gandhi's birthday. Mahatma Gandhi, a lawyer whose life was transformed by his experiences in South Africa, was the most influential figure in India's independence campaign.


Gandhi successfully led various Satyagraha and Ahimsa protests to liberate India from British colonial tyranny. He committed his life to the fight for liberty. His nonviolent attitude and ability to win people over with love and compassion had a significant effect on the Indian civil rights struggle. Nathuram Godse killed him on January 30, 1948.
