This process which started in those days still goes on today. However, July 30 was formally declared as International Friendship Day (World Friendship Day) by the United Nations in 2011.
Friendship Day is said to have originated from the United States of America back in the 1960's. Back then, friendship bands were tied in political rallies, an activity which has since transformed into friends tying each other friendship bands on this day.
