An Artistic Take On The Supreme Goddess- Devi Durga Made With Pure Belgian And Dark Chocolate In Kolkata

This year, the celebration has been taken to a whole new level in the city by creating a breathtaking Durga idol made entirely of pure Belgian and Dark Chocolate. 

As Autumn sets in, the air in Kolkata gets heavier with the fragrance of incense, the sound of dhak, and the excitement of the grandest festival of all, Durga Pujo. For Bengalis, this celebration is not complete without the joy of feasting. This year, the celebration has been taken to a whole new level in the city by creating a breathtaking Durga idol made entirely of pure Belgian and Dark Chocolate. 

In a spectacular fusion of two of Bengalis' favourite indulgences, a 12-foot-tall Chocolate Durga idol, weighing a mighty 80 kilograms, carved out of the finest Belgian and Dark Chocolate was unveiled. This creation serves as a culinary tribute to the skilled Kumartuli potters, who have for generations, crafted the traditional clay idols with immense dedication and artistry.

The creation of this Chocolate Durga masterpiece was a labour of love, as a dedicated team of three artisans, under the expert guidance of the Executive Chef of Holiday Inn Kolkata Airport, worked tirelessly for 15 days. They toiled for nine hours each day to meticulously shape every detail of this majestic idol.

In addition to that, they joined hands with the Kolkata Police to undertake a heartwarming initiative where children of the inmates of Dumdum Correctional Home were treated to a fun filled afternoon where they witnessed city’s only Chocolate Durga idol, prepared with 80 Kg of Belgian chocolate. 

The Chocolate Durga idol will be displayed till 25th October, 2023.

Apart from the chocolate Durga, there is another Durga idol in the city that showcases a social cause- Durga Puja pandals created out of electronic and plastic waste. The artisans used more than 800 kgs of waste material like dish antennas, mouses, light fittings and plastic bottles for the puja pandal being made at Udita Apartments.

This initiative is aimed at repurposing existing waste items instead of procuring items specifically for the creation of pandals that are bound to be deconstructed soon after the pujas. Hence, this move also helps the respective pandals stand out from the rest for their uniqueness and the sustainable angle attached to them.
