New Delhi: Men and makeup didn't go hand and hand even till a few years back. But, with the changing times and the paradigm shift in the mindset, people seem to be more open about their choices. With things changing for the better and people being more accomodative, concepts like being 'queer' are now welcomed with open arms.

The fashion and beauty industry has also appreciated the concept of 'gender fluidity' and that men can too wear sarees or makeup just like women can wear pants and coats. Additionally, the increase in representation of the LGBTQIA community in modern times has motivated people to be proud of their gender choices and the month of June has been dedidated to celebrate all those who are 'queer'.

Although 'Pride Month' began long back, but it has gained mainstream importance only recently. To celebrate Pride Month and all those who are 'queer', ABP Live had a candid conversation with Instagram influencer Deep Pathare, whose love for makeup and bold colours knows no bounds.

Proudly identifying himself as queer and showcasing his love for the beauty industry, Deep strives to break all stereotypes. He says, "Being fluid in terms of fashion and beauty means having the freedom to transform oneself into whoever one wants to be. It means breaking away from societal molds, not being defined by specific clothing pieces or the color of one's lipstick, and refusing to be confined within rigid boxes. It's about embracing individuality and expressing oneself authentically without limitations."

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Can you share your journey of becoming an influencer representing the LGBTQIA community?

Being an influencer representing the LGBTQIA community has always been a natural part of who I am. I have always been open and proud about my identity both online and in my personal life. It's important to note that my sexuality doesn't define my skills as a makeup content creator. However, I embrace my role as an influencer to showcase diversity, inclusivity, and representation within the beauty industry. By being authentic to myself and sharing my experiences, I hope to inspire and empower others from the LGBTQIA community.

Your reels and pictures are based on makeup. When did you discover your love for it?

Makeup has been a lifelong passion for me, and it's a skill that I have dedicated years to perfecting. Even as a child, I was always drawn to the mesmerizing world of colors. In 2020, I made the decision to pursue makeup as a full-time career. I wanted to not only share the beauty of makeup and my art with others but also address the lack of proper queer representation in mainstream media.

While male beauty content creators were not as common in India a few years ago, I have been inspired by the incredible work done by male beauty creators around the world. Today, I am fortunate to have fantastic contemporaries thriving in this niche field of content creation, which is truly empowering.

You strive to break all stereotypes in makeup. Can you share what motivates you to do it?

What motivates me to break stereotypes in makeup is the desire to challenge societal norms and create a space where everyone feels represented and celebrated. I believe that makeup is an art form that knows no boundaries, and it should be inclusive of all genders, sexual orientations, and identities. By defying stereotypes, I aim to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves and express their creativity without fear or limitations. It brings me immense joy to see individuals gaining confidence and finding empowerment through the transformative power of makeup.

What specific challenges or obstacles have you faced and how have you overcome them?

Throughout my journey, I have encountered several challenges. One of the main obstacles has been the under-representation and lack of awareness from brands regarding the community of male beauty content creators. However, I strongly believe that art has a voice, and I have been honing mine through social media platforms.

I can already see the beginning of a positive change that will contribute to the growth of society as a whole. My aspiration is to make a difference in the acceptance of makeup on a larger scale. As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, it is high time we leave behind traditional and hetero-normative gender norms, and refrain from judging people based on how they choose to express themselves, whether it be through makeup or otherwise.

Your makeup features bold colours, especially, when it comes to eye makeup. Can you tell us the reason behind this?

I have always had a fondness for colours. Previously, it was evident in my paintings, and now I have shifted my canvas to my face. Each colour and look carries a meaningful message, and I leave it open for my audience to interpret as they please. It allows me to wear my emotions on my face and express myself authentically.

You have also shot a reel featuring Deepika Padukone's skincare line. How was the experience of working with her?

Fantastic. She was down to earth and very welcoming. It was overwhelming to have shot with the top stars globally, and she helped me calm down before the shoot. It has definitely been one of the highlights of my career as a content creator.

Can you share a memorable moment where you felt that your efforts had a meaningful impact on someone's life?

One of the most rewarding moments for me was when my reels garnered over ten million views and when I received an award for my work within a year of being a content creator. Additionally, being acknowledged and recognized at events or even by people approaching me in public just to compliment my work has been truly heartwarming.

I strive to make my platform a safe space through initiatives like #WeepWithDeep, where people can freely express themselves and discuss things casually, even anonymously, just as they would with their friends. These moments affirm that my efforts are making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Have you ever been trolled for your content? What strategies do you employ to stay resilient and continue making a positive impact?

Yes, I have received my fair share of negative comments and trolling. However, the overwhelming support and love I receive from my community far outweigh the negativity. I prefer to focus on the people who cheer me for my art rather than engaging in fights with those who don't understand or simply want to spread hate. I'm fortunate to have a strong support system that helps me navigate through the challenges posed by haters. They provide me with the strength and resilience to continue making a positive impact in the face of adversity.

How difficult is it for a queer person to represent what they stand for or showcase what they love in social media?

I am privileged to have found a platform where I can authentically represent myself and showcase my art. Like any job, there are challenges involved, but in my case, they are more public, with a larger audience having access to me. However, I remain committed to being true to myself and expressing my art. While there may be obstacles along the way, I embrace them as part of my journey.

What was the reaction of your family when you first told them about your gender identity? Were your parents supportive?

I am grateful to have a loving and supportive family. They responded with understanding and support. Their acceptance has been a blessing, and their unwavering support has played a crucial role in my journey.

Lastly, what message would you like to share with individuals who may be struggling with their identity or facing discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity?

To those who are struggling with their identity or facing discrimination, I would like to convey the message of self-kindness and kindness towards others. Remember that your journey is unique and can be taken at your own pace. Seek out safe spaces where you can freely express yourself and find support. Surround yourself with a loving and understanding community that embraces you for who you are. Remember that you are not alone, and there is strength in your authenticity.
