Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's security cover has been increased and this has simultaneously led to the Opposition raising their eyebrows in the state. Around 45 security personnel have been added to the existing 50 police personnel in the CM's security team, reported IANS. When questioned, the leaders of CPI (M) party denied it, saying that this was typical for someone receiving Z+ security coverage.

Earlier, his motorcade covered around a dozen cars, including an ambulance and a few commandos among about 40 police officers.

The increase in security has raised the eyebrows of his rivals. V.D. Satheesan, the leader of the opposition, and other Congress leaders who are quick to criticise the Chief Minister described the alleged move as a "nuisance" for the man on the street.

They claimed that the increased security shows that the CM is afraid of the people, said the report.

Earlier, VD Satheesan asked, "The chief minister, who said the UDF only knows how to hold Satyagraha, is travelling in Kerala accompanied by 40 police vehicles. Who is the chief minister afraid of?”

A media critic on condition of anonymity told IANS that with the passing of Oomen Chandy, a two-term chief minister of the Congress who is recognised for his friendliness and accessibility, the issue has attracted increased attention.

“Practically everyone who paid tributes to Chandy hailed him for being so approachable even during the seven years of his chief ministership. Comparisons were drawn between Chandy- the most easily accessible and Vijayan the least accessible,” said the critic, as per IANS.

However, this is not the first time the CM has opted for increased security. Vijayan earlier relied on private security during Netherlands visit.

Meanwhile, it can be noted that there is a bypoll scheduled to be held in Puthupally constituency which was necessitated after the demise of former CM Oommen Chandy on September 5.

Following the elections, Kerala Assembly is set to resume on September 11 where it is expected that the Opposition might question the ruling on the tightened security.
