A 33-year-old fireman died while dousing a massive fire in a godown in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on Tuesday. The incident took place while firemen were dousing the fire at the godown of Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL).
According to a report on The News Minute, the deceased was identified as JS Renjith from Attingal, who had served for six years in Chackai Fire Force Station. Shafi, control room official told TNM, the information regarding the fire was received at 1.45 am. A team in which Renjith was a part was sent from Chackai station near international airport.
Shafi said, when Renjith went to douse the fire shutter broke and bricks fell on him. Renjith was rushed to the hospital. However, he died during treatment.
Meanwhile, the firefighters doused the fire after a fight for several hours. Till now, KMSCL officials fear that there was a loss of over Rs 1 crore.
Opposition Express Concern Over Fire
Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan expressed concern over "mysterious" fire at warehouses of government-run KMSCL. The concern was since the fire was reported at a time when KMSCL is under probe over alleged irregularities during Covid.
Satheesan, as per IANS, said "The fire at a godown of the state-run Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL) here on Tuesday, and a similar one at its Kollam godown last week is definitely suspicious as a Lok Ayukta probe is on in Covid purchase irregularities."
"KMSCL is mired in corruption. In the past two years, it has seen nine managing directors. In this organisation, medicines are bought and commissions pocketed. One of the reasons why the vigilance probe was suddenly stopped here as it could have apparently landed some "top" officials in trouble. So the probe should not be limited to the fire, but against all the manipulations happening there," said Satheesan.
