Kerala police on Tuesday said that the accused in the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl had previously been arrested under POCSO Act in New Delhi five years ago. Aluva Rural Superintendent of Police Vivek Kumar said the accused Ashfaq Alam was in jail for one month in connection with the crime. However, he later came out on bail, as per a report on PTI.

The SP said, "He was arrested by Ghazipur police (Uttar Pradesh) in 2018 for attempting to sexually molest a 10-year-old girl there."

Kerala police found out about his criminal history when they conducted his background check. The police said that they tried to find out about Alam from Bihar and whether he had done any crimes before coming to Kerala.

Meanwhile, Alam was moved to the sub-jail on Sunday. Later, the identification parade of the accused was carried out. Around three witnesses attended the identification parade.

However, the police did not provide any other details.

Thajudeen, a witness, said that he saw Alam going along with a girl inside the market.

He said that the accused should get maximum punishment. He said, "I saw him that day... I will say this anywhere."

On the next step, a senior police officer said, "We have already filed the custody application of the accused. After the test identification parade procedure, we will step into that. The rest of the things will be decided by the court."

A five-year-old girl child was allegedly kidnapped, raped, and murdered on 28 July by an accused identified as Alam, a Bihar resident who resided in the same building as the victim.

The child's family is also a native of the same state. The following day, her body was discovered in a bag abandoned in a marshy area behind a small market in the location near Aluva.
