Karnataka Congress announced the first list of 124 candidates for the state's Assembly election set to take place before May 2023. Till now, the Election Commission has not announced the dates for the polls.
However, Congress has gone ahead with the announcement since the tenure of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly is to end by May 24, 2023.
According to ANI, "Congress party announces the first list of 124 candidates for Karnataka Assembly Elections. Names of former CM Siddaramaiah, and State party president DK Shivakumar are present in the first list."
KPCC president DK Shivakumar on Congress's first candidate list for Karnataka polls said, "Congress party has already cleared all the names that the central selection community and the screening community had cleared it. In the next three-four days, the second list will also be finalised."
In a release, Congress announced that DK Shivakumar will be contesting from Kanakapura constituency. Priyank Kharge will be contesting from Chitapur (SC) constituency.
Amid expectations that Siddaramaiah will contest from Varuna, the leader was allotted the same constituency by the Congress high command.
Earlier, Siddaramaiah as per PTI said, "There is one opinion at home that I should be contesting from Varuna, so I have said (to the party's central leadership), clear Varuna, let's see."
The Congress leader said: "At home, they are saying that I should be contesting from one more constituency, let's see, I haven't thought about it." However, whether he would contest in one more constituency would be known only after the details of all the contesting candidates and their constituencies are announced.
On the other hand, Shiavanada Patil has been selected as the Congress candidate for Basavana Bagevadi.
Priyank Kharge will be contesting from Chitapur (SC) constituency.
The press release was issued by Mukul Wasnik, Congress General Secretary Incharge-CEC, on Saturday.
