Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal Secular (JDS) are doing politics over the issue of the supply of Cauvery water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. He stated that the state government had agreed to supply 3,000 cusecs of water, but the Supreme Court ordered it to supply 5,000 cusecs.
DK Shivakumar further said that the matter has reached the court again, and the Karnataka government is appealing to the authorities to reduce the water supply ordered by the top court.
"We know how to protect Karnataka farmers. BJP and JDS are doing politics. They demanded 25,000 cusecs of water. We agreed on 3,000 cusecs and now the court has given 5,000 cusecs. The matter is in court again, we are appealing before the authorities that has to be reduced because there is no rain," DK Shivakumar said, as quoted by ANI.
Earlier, DK Shivakumar said that the representatives convinced Supreme Court of the situation in the state related to sharing Cauvery water with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The Deputy CM said that during Cauvery Water Management Authority meeting held recently Tamil Nadu insisted that Karnataka should release 24,000 cusecs of water but the situation in the state was appraised to Apex Court.
Shivakumar also said that they convinced the Supreme Court of the fact that Tamil Nadu used 93 TMC water which is more than it should have used in difficult times. According to ANI, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "When the Cauvery water management authority (CWMA) meeting was held regarding the Cauvery issue, they insisted that 24 thousand cusecs should be released. We argued that we cannot release 24 thousand cusecs of water."
"They ordered that 5 thousand cusecs should be released. We said that we will release 3 thousand cusecs. Now we have again convinced the Supreme Court of the situation in Karnataka," he said.
