Police said that Mateen stabbed Ayub after the latter wanted to nominate his son for a post at a mosque. Ayub was a president for a Masjid in Tippu Nagar for the last 15 years, said Khanam, ex-corporator of KR Mark ward, in her complaint to Chamarajpet police. Mateen wanted to become president of the masjid. Both Ayub and Mateen constantly got into arguments on this and the accused threatened the victim and his family of dire consequences, Khanam told police.

"Mateen had told Ayub and others that he would not become president of the masjid if Ayub was alive and had threatened with dire consequences. The accused went to Ayub’s house on July 12 and demanded to be made president. Ayub, his family members and locals managed to send him away from the spot,” Police official from West Bengaluru division said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
