Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Aug 06 (ANI): The District Magistrate (DM) of Uttar Pradesh's Etah, Amit Kishore, was on Monday appointed as the replacement for former Deoria DM Sujit Kumar, who was ousted from his post in the wake of the recent shelter home case.

On Sunday, police arrested a couple and rescued 24 girls from a shelter home in Deoria after a girl escaped from the shelter home and informed the police how they were all treated like servants.

Both the man and his wife were managers at the shelter home, which had its license revoked following an inspection by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Apart from the removal of Kumar, former district police officers (DPOs) Neeraj Kumar and Abhishek Pandey were suspended for not taking action against the shelter house.

Addressing a presser, the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Praveen Kumar issued a clarification over rumours of there being 42 girls in the shelter home instead of 24, saying that the number of incoming and outgoing girls was not properly accounted for, thus resulting in confusion.

He also said that as per procedures, the girls will first be counselled before a medical examination can be conducted on them.

On a related note, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has set up an expert committee to conduct a social audit of all shelter homes for women and girls and has been asked to submit its report in three months. (ANI)
