Dr Ashima Goyal, Economist, Professor Emeritus, IGIDR and Former Member, India's Monetary Policy Committee noted on Saturday that the Indian job market is undergoing a significant transformation, but we are not recognising it.
“I had the privilege of serving on the Monetary Policy Committee for four years during the post-pandemic period, and one key takeaway from India’s growth trajectory at that time was its volatility. This volatility was partly due to both domestic reforms and global shocks. However, for the first time, the policy approach during these years was counter-cyclical, with domestic stimulus measures introduced in response to external shocks like the pandemic and the Ukraine war. Over these four years, India’s average growth rate stood at an impressive 8.3 per cent.” she added while speaking at the ABP Network Ideas of India Summit 2025.
“Numerous data reports show that during this period of high growth, job creation significantly increased. In fact, employment saw a 10 per cent rise. This highlights the importance of having strong buffers in place and policies that smoothen growth, ensuring stability even amid external shocks. So, when both small and large firms see a stable environment, they are more inclined to hire and expand their workforce. We are now starting to witness this positive shift in employment trends,” she highlighted.
Discussing the unorganised sector, Prof. Ashwani Mahajan, Author, Columnist, and National Co-convenor of Swadeshi Jagran Manch, stressed that the organised sector plays a crucial role in supporting the nation and holds significant potential for future growth. He pointed out that the rising unemployment, particularly among educated individuals, can partly be attributed to advancements in automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
While acknowledging the reality of unemployment, Prof. Mahajan highlighted the progress made over the past decade, noting that even the UNDP has recognised India's reduction in multidimensional poverty during this period.
