New Delhi: World Mosquito Day is observed every year on August 20 to spread awareness about diseases borne out from mosquitoes. This day marks the breakthrough discovery of British Doctor Sir Ronald Ross in 1897. He found out that malaria is transmitted between humans through the bite of a female mosquito.

This year's theme on World Mosquito Day is 'Reaching Zero Malaria Target'.

Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading life-threatening diseases such as dengue, Zika virus, chikungunya, and malaria. According to a survey conducted on the world's most dangerous animals, mosquitoes unexpectedly found the top spot on the list.

History & Importance Of World Mosquito Day

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has been organizing an annual event to commemorate the contribution of the British doctor since 1930.

"This day is of great importance to the health industry, which ensures the safety of human beings. According to the most recent figures, 435,000 people die every year from malaria. 219 million people are expected to be affected every year," a handout said.

Malaria currently exists in more than 100 countries. The basic and important step to combat the problem of mosquito-borne diseases is to take protective measures to avoid mosquito bites.

Measures To Prevent Mosquito-Borne Diseases

  1. Getting rid of stagnant water: Moist areas and places with stagnant water provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Use measures to safeguard yourself against the increasing number of mosquitoes.

  2. Keep your surroundings dry and clean. Take care of the holes and the dry spaces where water can collect.

  3. Clean the places with stagnant rainwater. Jam gutters and flat roofs should be checked and cleaned regularly along with the drainages.

  4. Protect your home - Many germs, including mosquitoes, are attracted to a dark and dirty environment. Make sure that the living spaces at home are bright and clean.

  5. It is difficult to protect yourself from mosquito bites during sleep. Be careful before going to bed at night.

  6. You can use mosquito nets to cover the bed to prevent mosquito bites.
