Monsoon brings relief along with a plethora of water-borne infections. Apart from water-borne diseases such as jaundice and typhoid, the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria increases. Similarly, food-borne diseases pose a serious threat. The reason for this is the use of contaminated food or water that contains bacteria, viruses or other pathogens. Foodborne illnesses last for two to three days.
People most vulnerable to these diseases include the elderly, pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers, children, and those with chronic diseases such as cancer, liver disorders with weakened immune systems. Dr Upasana Sharma, associated with Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, says, “The prevalence of food-borne diseases increases 10 times during the monsoon. These diseases are mild in nature." Experts describe the common symptoms of food-borne diseases as abdominal pain or abdominal cramps, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, weakness, and mild fever.
Measures to prevent monsoon diseases-
1- Bacteria and pathogens are found almost in every source of food. 2- Consumption of raw food is the biggest factor in food poisoning. 3-Here are some measures to prevent food-borne diseases or poisoning. Cleanliness is a very important and important step towards food safety and health. 1- Always wash your hands before eating or cooking food. 2- Drink only boiled or filtered water. 3- Make sure to cook eggs and meat thoroughly.
4- Avoid undercooked or raw food. 5- Wash meat, fruits and vegetables thoroughly before cooking. 6- ORS solution is also a good option to hydrate the body when suffering from diarrhea. It helps in the restoration of electrolytes. 7- Reheat the refrigerated food before eating. 8- Avoid eating spicy or hard to digest food. 9- If you have persistent vomiting and diarrhea for more than two days, blood in your stool, a high fever, dizziness or unbearable abdominal pain, dryness in your mouth, or a change in the color of your urine, consult a doctor immediately.
