This is why people often consume content that triggers that emotion within them. Horror enthusiasts are always on the hunt for the next big thrill, be it movies, shows or even games. 


Games have become an extremely influential part of the horror genre due to their interactive and immersive scenarios. They allow the player to feel like they’re part of a horror story, ensuring that a chill runs down their spine.


The horror game genre is a vast one and there is something for everyone. So, let’s take a look at some great horror games out there today. 


Alan Wake 2



A sequel to the highly popular Alan Wake, Alan Wake 2 continues the story of the titular hero 13 years after the release of the original game. It is a very unique entry in the horror survival genre. The story and world are rooted in the significance of art and so, the game utilises many different methods to make the game a highly cinematic experience. 


The game, which came out in 2023, also utilises several live-action cutscenes within the game to give it a very realistic feel. It introduces a new protagonist into the mix, Saga Anderson, who you play in the game alongside Alan Wake.

Dead Space (2023 Remake)



Dead Space, which originally came out in 2008, is an iconic game in the survival horror genre. And with remakes of several deserving titles coming out, it should come as no surprise that Dead Space would get the same treatment. 


The remake was released in 2023 and it completely revamped the original. Graphical improvements in the form of new features like ray tracing further add to the sci-fi horror element of the game and the immersion of the player. 


Dead Space is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. 



Kamla



In case the name wasn’t enough of a clue, Kamla is actually a game of Indian origin. You play as a Tantrik, a priest with expertise in dark magic, who’s mission is to exorcise the titular antagonist, Kamla. 


Launched in May this year, the game requires you to explore and find ingredients for the exorcism in the Kamla’s home while she hunts for you. The dark setting, interesting puzzles and constant fear of Kamla finding you will keep you on your toes. 


The game also has options for Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi and Tamil. 


Kamla is available on PC. 



Resident Evil Village



It’s impossible to compete any horror game list without a game from the Resident Evil Franchise. The iconic franchise is beloved by horror fans everywhere. The latest addition to the mainline games, Resident Evil Village brings a brand-new adventure for fans.


Village, which launched in 2021, is the eighth instalment in the series. Horror fuelled action awaits you with new adversaries like Lady Dimitrescu and Karl Heisenberg thrown into the mix. 


Resident Evil Village is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and PC.  



Phasmophobia



Games within the horror genre frequently drop players in alone, which helps to add to the fear factor. But what about the people who want to experience the joy of horror together with their friends? Well, that’s where Phasmophobia comes in.


Since its release in 2020, the game has given numerous players the opportunity to team up with friends and become paranormal investigators. The psychological horror game supports a maximum of 4 players in online co-op. 


The game also has support for Virtual Reality (VR). 


Phasmophobia is available on PC.
