New Delhi: Dhyan Chand is regarded as one of the greatest personalities in the history of Indian sports. He was an Indian hockey player who earned three Olympic gold medals during an era where India dominated field hockey. His birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day in India every year on August 29.

To celebrate the life of this sports legend, his story will soon come alive on big screens. Reportedly, the film will be titled ‘Dhyan Chand’ and will go on floors in 2021. This biopic will be directed by the ‘Udta Punjab’ director Abhishek Chaubey.

Ronnie Screwvala took to his Twitter and announced the film earlier yesterday. He tweeted, “1500+ goals, 3 Olympic gold medals, and a story of India’s pride...It gives us immense pleasure to announce our next with #AbhishekChaubey - a biopic on the Hockey Wizard of India- #DHYANCHAND @RSVPMovies @prem_rajgo @pashanjal @realroark #SupratikSen @bluemonkey_film”



Abhishek Chaubey told IANS in a statement, “Dhyan Chand is one of the greatest hockey players in the history of our national Sport, and it is a matter of pride to direct his biopic. We had massive amount of research material in hand and, honestly, every achievement of his life deserves a separate story. I am grateful to have a brilliant creative force like (producer) Ronnie Screwvala backing the film, and we cannot wait to get started next year. (We are) Hoping to announce the lead actor soon.”

Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok Kumar, who is also an Olympic medallist was elated at the news. He told IANS, “There is no better hockey player to date in the world like three-time Olympic gold medalist Dhyan Chand. The genius of Dhyan Chand and his achievements will be seen by the world. My family and I are thrilled to be a part of this.”

This movie is expected to hit the theatres in 2022.
