New Delhi: The trailer of Mani Ratnam's most ambitious project Ponniyin Selvan 1 is out. The period drama stars an ensemble cast including the likes of  Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu,Vikram, Karthi, R Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R Parthiban. Ponniyin Selvan will have two installments and is based on  Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan.

The 3 minute 23 second long trailer gives a glimpse of the scale, drama and the array of diverse actors that are part of this huge project. The period-action genre is being attempted once again and this time in the hands of Mani Ratnam, it will be a much-anticipated enterprise. The trailer gives a glimpse into the socio-political and personal aspects of the Chola dynasty. Grand warring sequences and opulence of kingdoms are thrown in, as the lead characters  are gradually revealed.

Perhaps, after SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’, this period-action film also performs well at the box office. A lot of excitement has been riding high on the project and the choice of the subject matter, considering how even Rajamouli wanted to adapt ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ on celluloid.

The music is composed by  A. R. Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad and production design by Thota Thar. The story has been adapted by Mani Ratnam with  Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan for cinema.

Interestingly, theadaption of the novel had been planned by many directors and actors in the past but for various reasons did not become a reality. Earlier in the late 50s, M. G. Ramachandran tried to adapt the novel but had failed. Likewise, Mani Ratnam tried to adapt the novel in the mid-1990s and early-2010s, which became unsuccessful.

Now, the final reality, 'Ponniyin Selvan:1' shot across India will be released on September 30, 2022.
