New Delhi:  Mala Parvathy resigned from AMMA after the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists refused to take disciplinary action against the rape accused actor-produced Vijay Babu.

The actors' body of the Malayalam film industry on Monday refused to take any disciplinary action even after its internal complaints committee recommended the same.

“A person cannot be shown the door from the association on the sole ground that there is a complaint against him. We have to get his version and there should be multiple hearings. We also have to protect a member of the association,’’ AMMA's vice-president Maniyanpilla Raju briefed the media, IndianExpress reported.

In protest, actress Mala Parvathy announced her resignation from AMMA. "In the statement, if AMMA had said that they had asked him to step down I would not have resigned. But this does not look like disciplinary action and as an ICC member, I cannot accept it. Hence, I am resigning from ICC," she was quoted as saying in a News18 report.

Viay Babu went into hiding after the Kochi city police registered a case of rape against him last week. Vijay Babu's lookout circular was released by the police.

He is also accused of revealing the name of the accuser on Facebook Live. In the same Live stream, he called himself the 'real victim' besides also revealing the name of the female actor and stating that he will be filing a defamation case against her.

Kochi city police deputy commissioner V U Kuriakose said that a separate case against Vijay Babu will be registered for disclosing the name of the actor who accused him of rape.

In an earlier case too, the AMMA's position was critiqued by many. The AMMA had expelled actor Dileep after he was arrested on charges of conspiracy behind abduction and sexual assault of a woman actor in 2017. When the same actor was reinstated to his position by the body in 2018, many women protested against the action.

Vijay Babu was recently seen in 'Antakshari' which released on April 22 on SonyLIV.
