Laila Majnu re-release: Six years after its initial release, the romantic drama 'Laila Majnu' starring Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri has finally found success on the big screen. The film, which was re-released last Friday, has surpassed its original box office performance in just four days. The film when released in 2018 had managed to earn just over Rs 2 crore and was a box office failure. It gained its audience years later and since then has gained immense love from the audience, gaining a cult following.

Laila Majnu surpasses the lifetime collection of its original run

The film earned around Rs 2 crore on its opening weekend. On Monday the film continued to perform good and collected Rs 60 lakh, bringing its four-day total to Rs 2.6 crore, surpassing its entire original run, which stood at Rs 2.15 crore.

Laila Majnu now faces just two more days of uninterrupted screening before several major releases hit theaters. These include Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2, Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, and the John Abraham starrer Vedaa.

While these new films, releasing on August 15, are expected to dominate screens, Laila Majnu could maintain a presence in theaters, albeit on fewer screens.

Avinash Tiwary on the film's re-release

Earlier during the press conference where the film’s nationwide re-release was announced, Avinash Tiwary shared his emotions, saying, “This is an incredible feeling. On the third day when I had gone to watch the film with my parents, the posters were being pulled down. The film would keep coming up in conversation to a point that it started irritating me, that enough it has been six years now! ‘Tab kyu nahi dekhne aaye the?’ that was my feeling when they’d share love. But now, the people have brought it back. I would think on the lines from the film, ‘jhoot hai tumhari duniya,’ and today I think, it is true, there is that pure world beyond the mountains. I feel vindicated today as am sure many do,”

Triptii Dimri on the film's re-release

Triptii Dimri also recalled the time when the film was released. She said in the press conference, “Back then, Avinash and I did feel bad. I would think that after the film, I would be so famous that I would not be able to go the market to buy vegetables!  None of that happened as people didn’t step out to watch the film in theatres. Today, people confess, ‘Galti ho gayi, wish we could watch it on the big screen.”

The romance drama is written and presented by Imtiaz and directed by his brother Sajid Ali. It is produced by Ali's former wife Preety and Ekta Kapoor.
