New Delhi: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar took to social media to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for talking about sanitary pads in his Independence Day 2020 speech. PM Modi delivered his seventh consecutive speech from Delhi’s Red Fort on Saturday (August 15) and spoke about government’s policies for women empowerment. Netizens also hailed PM for mentioning sanitary pads in his speech and breaking the taboo against menstruation.

PM Modi’s speech drew all the attention as he said the Central government has distributed sanitary pads to 5 crore women at one rupee. Akshay Kumar, who was last seen in ‘Good Newwz’, was all praises for our PM.

“Our @PMOIndia talking about sanitary pads in his Independence Day speech today is true progress...made menstruation a mainstream topic. Also kudos to the government who has so far distributed sanitary pads to about 5 crore women at Re. 1,” the ‘Kesari’ actor tweeted.



Akshay Kumar worked in the film ‘PadMan’, which aimed to break the taboo surrounding menstruation and create awareness among the people. The comedy drama also starred Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor.

The R Balki directorial was based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who created a low-cost sanitary napkin machine for the women in rural parts of Tamil Nadu.

The 'Mission Mangal' actor shared a special video message on Independence Day 2020 to urge the people to show empathy to the poor. He tweeted, "We all know these people, we all have these people in our lives.  On this #IndependenceDay, lets come together for them, lets come #Together4India."

Kumar talked about the plight of hawkers and vegetable sellers and said that they have been impacted by the lockdown and rains.



On the professional front, Akshay Kumar will be next seen in ‘Laxmmi Bomb’. The film co-starring Kiara Advani was slated to hit the silver screens on Eid 2020. However, it got delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis. The movie, which is the remake of ‘Kanchana 2’, will premiere directly on Disney+ Hotstar.

Akshay and the team of 'Bell Bottom' recently left for the UK to commence shoot for the upcoming film. The 'Housefull 4' actor also has 'Prithviraj' and 'Atrangi Re' in his kitty.

His much-awaited flick 'Sooryavanshi' is expected to release after the cinema halls re-open. The Rohit Shetty directorial was slated to hit the silver screens in March 2020. However, the makers decided to postpone the release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
