Veteran actor Praveen Kumar Sobti who played the iconic role of Bheem in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat passed away after surrering a heart attack. Hailing from Punjab, the actor became a household name after playing the role of Bheem in the mythological series. Kumar’s daughter Nikunika told ABP Live, “He passed away on Monday(February 7, 2022) around 9.30 pm. He suffered a heart attack. He died at home in Delhi.”


He passed away at his his Ashok Vihar residence in Delhi.


"He had a chronic chest infection problem. At night, when he started feeling uneasy, we called the doctor at home. He passed away between following a cardiac arrest," the late actor's daughter further added


The 6 foot 6 inch tall Praveen played the second brother Bheem in the tele-serial that achieved cult status when it was first telecast 30 years ago.


Besides Mahabharat, Kumar also starred in many films including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Shehenshah and Dharmendra’s Loha. Other films to his credit include Aaj Ka Arjun, Ajooba, and Ghayal, among others.


Before his acting stint, Praveen was a hammer and discus throw athlete. A four-time Asian Games medallist, he also represented India in 1968 Mexico and 1972 Munich Olympics. He was also honoured with Arjuna award and had worked as the Deputy Commandant in the Border Security Force (BSF) as well.







The actor had also contested unsuccessfully from Wazirpur in Delhi on Aam Aadmi Party ticket in 2013. Following which he had joined the BJP. 


His last film titled ‘Mahabharat Aur Barbarik’ was released in the year 2013. Sobti essayed the character of Bhima here as well.
