New Delhi: Tamil actress Nayanthara recently discussed her marriage to filmmaker Vignesh Shivan in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, where she revealed the difficulties they encounter. She expressed conflicted feelings about their relationship and the criticism they get as a pair. The new Netflix documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale’ explored the connection between the pair.

Nayanthara said that she often feels guilty for "dragging" Vignesh into their relationship. “Sometimes, I feel that it would’ve been better if we were not together. I always feel guilty. Even today I feel guilty. I dragged him into this relationship; not dragged him, but I took the first step," the actress said.

Nayanthara said that the hatred they encounter sometimes overshadows the love and respect they share. She said, “We all think that if somebody is successful, they have to get married to somebody who is equally successful. But it’s love that you’re choosing. You’re not choosing success. You’re not choosing money and luxury. That’s not how it’s calculated at all. You fall in love, you fall in love.”

Nayanthara Defends Vignesh Shivan

She addressed the criticism she receives for choosing a partner in Vignesh Shivan, who is often seen as less "successful" than she is in the profession. She explained, “Obviously, he started off much later than me. I'm a senior in the industry. I started off when I was 18 and he became a director when he was 21, which is a great thing! At 21, you're usually an assistant director with someone. He's so smart, intelligent, you ask him anything under the sun, he has all the answers.”

Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan tied the knot in 2022, after dating for over seven years. The couple welcomed twin sons Uyir and Ulag via surrogacy in 2022.
