Janhvi Kapoor, who is currently busy promoting her upcoming film 'Mr. & Mrs. Mahi', spoke about her mother Sridevi’s death and spoke about the emotional struggles she endured while promoting her debut film 'Dhadak’ in 2018, the same year her mother passed away. In an interview with Mashable, Janhvi shared a particularly distressing incident that occurred on the set of a dance reality show.
Janhvi Kapoor on getting panic attack after Sridevi's death
Speaking about how she put up a brave face and started promoting her debut film shortly after her mother’s death, Janhvi recounted an incident in a conversation with Mashable. “I went on a dance show and it was right after the incident. I was promoting Dhadak and everything was very fresh. My team was taking care that I don’t get reminded of my mother, but this show didn’t tell us that they were going to give a tribute to mom. So they played an audio-visual of all my mother’s songs with an emotional voiceover, and these kids started dancing to pay homage. It was beautiful but it was too new for me. I couldn’t breathe anymore. I started howling and crying. I ran off the stage and went to my van. Had a proper panic attack. They obviously cut all that out and instead put up another clip of me clapping and smiling, and people were like, ‘Does she really not give a f***?’ But what happened was very different,” she said.
Janhvi on facing judgement
Janhvi also addressed the scrutiny she faced regarding how she coped with her mother's death.
After she passed and I started promoting my film, other people’s judgement was weird, jab main baahr jaake baat nahi karti thi interviews mein to log sochte they kitni snooty hai, jab main khush hone ki koshish karti thi to log kehte they ye to bilkul affect nahi hui hai. (When I didn't talk about her in interviews, people thought I was being snooty. When I tried to be happy, they said I wasn't affected by her death at all.) So, it was very confusing. For me my mom is everything my source of comfort, and validation, my whole world and she was very overprotective and very invested and so when that went, I think I just started looking at the worst places for validation and comfort. I made some sh***y choices.”
Sridevi died in 2018 due to drowning in a Dubai hotel.
Janhvi’s film ‘Mr. & Mrs. Mahi’ opposite Rajkummar Rao is scheduled to be released on May 31.
