New Delhi: Actor Matthew Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the show 'Friends', was found dead at his Los Angeles house on Saturday, according to TMZ, which cited law enforcement sources. He was 54.
The Los Angeles Times was informed by law enforcement sources that first responders found Perry unresponsive in a hot tub at his residence and were unable to revive him. According to the report, the death is currently being investigated by robbery-homicide detectives of the Los Angeles Police Department.
After playing pickleball for two hours, Matthew Perry reportedly went back to his LA house and sent his assistant to go on an errand. When the assistant returned in around two hours, Perry was still unconscious in the Jacuzzi, according to TMZ. He made an emergency help call to 911.
No drugs were found at the scene, according to reports, and there is no sign of foul play.
Perry, however, had fought an alcohol and painkiller addiction for years and had often visited rehabilitation centres. Due to his drug use, the actor had health issues in 2018, including a burst colon that required a seven-hour operation and the use of a colostomy bag for several months.
Many of his Hollywood colleagues and fans have expressed their condolences in response to the sudden passing of the 'Friends' star. The sitcom producer, Warner Bros. TV, also issued a statement.
“We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans,” it read.
Born in Massachusetts, Matthew Perry was raised in Canada before moving to Los Angeles. Perry's parents separated before he turned one year old, and he was raised by his mother in Ottawa. After attending Ashbury College, he continued his education in Sherman Oaks, California's The Buckley School.
Matthew Perry is best known for his iconic portrayal as Chandler Bing in the hit TV show 'Friends'. The sitcom ran from 1994 to 2004 and became a cultural sensation. The sitcom, which also starred Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and David Schwimmer, went on to become one of the all-time greatest hits.
