People were furious on social media after the YouTuber made remarks that were seen as 'racist' and disrespectful. Many were waiting for Chum to respond and she has now expressed her disappointment over his mockery of both her identity and her achievements.
Chum passionately condemned the YouTuber's remarks in an Instagram story post, stressing the need to distinguish between humour and hatred. “Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun,'" she wrote.
Chum Darang said, "Mocking someone’s achievements is not ‘banter.’ It’s time we draw the line between humor and hate. What’s even more disappointing is that this wasn’t just about my ethnicity—my hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected."
She went on to express her support for those who have experienced racism, especially those from the Northeast, as she completed her message. She wrote, "To my fellow Northeasterners and everyone who has faced racism—I see you, I hear you, and I stand with you. We all deserve respect, dignity, and equality. Let’s raise our voices against racism and promote a culture of empathy, kindness, and understanding. #NoRoomForRacism #NotOkayWithRacism."

The whole scandal began when Elvish Yadav made fun of Chum Darang—her name, her part in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’—during a podcast with Rajat Dalal. Elvish remarked on the podcast, "Karanveer ko pakka COVID tha kyunki Chum kisko pasand aati hai bhai, itna taste kiska kharab hota hai!" (Roughly translated: "Who would want Chum, bro? Karanveer must have had COVID. Who could have such poor taste!?”).
Many people, including Chum's fans, found Elvish's remarks offensive and racist, and they reacted negatively when they became viral.
