Music composer and singer Amaal Mallik surprised fans earlier this year when he shared a deeply personal update: he was distancing himself from his family, including his brother Armaan Mallik and parents Daboo and Jyoti Mallik. Now, the artist has spoken up about his decision, explaining why stepping back was necessary—for both personal healing and clarity.
Amaal Malik on how his decision brought family together
In a recent interview with 'The Times of India', Amaal shared that choosing distance has, paradoxically, brought the family closer. “I had bottled up a lot of emotions over the years. People often avoid discussing personal or family issues online, but when I did, it felt like a weight had lifted. Sometimes, even those closest to you can’t truly see what you’re going through,” he said candidly.
Amaal reflected on how he used to view his family as a single, inseparable unit. Yet, over time, he realised there was a growing emotional gap—one that neither side fully acknowledged. “I probably missed recognising their needs too,” he admitted. He revealed that some fans had questioned why he had slowed down musically or why he wasn’t collaborating with his brother anymore. His family, too, was taken by surprise. But, he said, the separation ended up helping everyone gain perspective and understand one another better.
He also addressed how society tends to idolise parents, often overlooking that they, too, are human. “We place them on pedestals, but it’s important to remember they can make mistakes like anyone else,” he remarked.
What Amaal Malik had said?
Back in March, Amaal made headlines with a heartfelt post on social media where he accused his parents of creating a divide between him and Armaan. “The journey has been terrific for the both of us, but the actions of my parents have been the reason we as brothers have gone too far from one another, and all of this has made me step in for myself, as it has left a very deep scar across my heart,” he wrote.
