New Delhi: One of the most awaited movies of this year ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is an upcoming biographical crime film. This movie will witness Alia Bhatt portraying the role of the protagonist Gangubai Kothewali, the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura. Directed by the celebrated filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this movie will witness Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Huma Qureshi in special cameo roles.

While the shooting of ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is almost complete, reportedly, Alia Bhatt has started shooting the final phase of the movie. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “So far, for the last two months, SLB and Alia were shooting night-long every night. Their body clock was under severe shock. Now with shootings shifted to day-time Alia is now adjusting to the normal routine.”
Reportedly, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is eyeing for a Diwali release for the film in 2021. The source further added, “SLB was keen to release the film only in movie theatres, no matter how long they have to wait. With the new Tamil starrer Master doing well in the South for Pongal, hopes are now high in the North for a similar revival in theatre fortunes. SLB is looking at a Diwali release. If all goes well, Gangubai Kathiawadi would get a massive 2000-print release across India.”
The plot of the movie revolves around a young girl who has been sold to prostitution by her boyfriend. The story then evolves when she becomes the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura.
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ was earlier titled ‘Heera Mandi’ with Priyanka Chopra illustrating the role of the protagonist. However, she was replaced by Alia Bhatt.
This movie will also mark Shantanu Maheshwari’s Bollywood debut who will be seen playing the character of Ramnik Lal, Gangubai’s boyfriend.
Other than Alia and Shantanu, this movie will also star Vijay Raaz and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles.
