New Delhi: Assembly elections for five states are set to conclude on Monday with Uttar Pradesh witnessing its last phase of polling today.


The results for the polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur will be announced on March 10 (Thursday) with the counting of votes on the same day.


Ahead of the result announcement, here is a look at the voter turnout in the states this time around.

Uttar Pradesh Election 2022


Voting in the country's most populous state was divided into seven phases.


The first phase of polling for 58 assembly seats took place on February 10 across Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Gautam Budh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura, and Agra. A voter turnout of 69.42% was recorded in Phase 1.


The Phase 2 polling was held on February 15 including 55 constituencies in Saharanpur, Bijnor, Sambhal, Rampur, Bareilly, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Amroha, and Moradabad districts. Overall, 64.66% of eligible citizens cast their votes.


The UP Phase 3 voting, which took place on February 20, covered 59 seats in Hathras, Firozabad, Kasganj, Etah, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Etawah, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Hamirpur, and Mahoba. A 62.49 voter turnout was reported in this phase. 


Then, Phase 4 covered Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Banda, and Fatehpur. The polling on February 23 for 59 seats saw a 62.82 turnout.


In the fifth phase, voters in Amethi, Sultanpur, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Ayodhya, Bahraich, Shravasti, and Gonda exercised their franchise on February 27. An unimpressive 58.33% of polling was recorded in this round involving 61 constituencies.


The sixth phase polling on March 3 covered 57 seats in Ambedkar Nagar, Balrampur, Siddharthanagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria, and Ballia. The voting percentage here was well below the 60%-mark at 55.79%.


Today, the final round of voting is underway for 54 assembly seats across Azamgarh, Mau, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Sonbhadra districts.


The 2017 Uttar Pradesh Election was also held in seven phases and saw an overall voter turnout of 61.04%.

Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab Elections 2022


The assembly elections in Uttarakhand, Goa, and Punjab were held in a single phase. 


Voting for both Uttarakhand and Goa Elections took place on February 14.


The hill state of Uttarakhand reported an overall turnout of 65.37%. The highest polling was recorded in Haridwar (74.77%), followed by Udham Singh Nagar (72.27%) and Uttarkashi (68.48). Almora had the lowest voter turnout at 53.71%.


In 2017, the voter turnout for the 69 seats of the Uttarakhand Assembly was 65.64%.


On February 14, Goa voted to elect 40 members of the State Legislative Assembly. The overall voter turnout was an impressive 79.61%, although, in 2017, Goa recorded a higher turnout as 81.21% of those eligible citizens cast their votes.


In this year's election, North Goa reported slightly higher polling (81.15%) than South Goa (78.27%).


The single-phase Punjab Election was held on February 20, to elect the 117 members of the 16th State Legislative Assembly. 


According to the final statement by Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer, the state saw an overall voter turnout of 71.95%, lower than the voting percentage (77.2%) reported in the 2017 Punjab Assembly Election.


The highest polling was registered in Mansa (81.24%), Sri Muktsar Sahib (80.49%), Malerkotla (78.28%), Bathinda (78.19%), and Fazilka (78.18%) districts. Amritsar reported the lowest turnout at 65.87%.


Manipur Election 2022


The Manipur Election 2022 was held in two phases on February 28 and March 5.


The first phase covered 38 constituencies across Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Kangpokpi. According to the official statement on Manipur CEO's website, the voter turnout in this phase was 78.03%.


In Manipur Election Phase 2, polling was held for 22 seats across Chandel, Jiribam, Senapati, Tamenglong, Thoubal, and Ukhrul districts. 76.62% of those eligible to poll cast their votes in this round.


In 2017, Manipur had witnessed a record turnout of 86% in the second phase of polling covering 22 Assembly constituencies, the highest since the 2009 general elections. The first phase of polling for 38 seats also had recorded 86% turnout, as per a report by news agency PTI.


This year, the campaigning for assembly elections had to follow stricter Coronavirus-induced curbs as Election Commission imposed a ban on public meetings, padayatra, and roadshows with the announcement of the election schedule.


The restrictions came as Omicron variant of COVID-19 led to the third wave of infections in the country.


Now all eyes are set on March 10 (Thursday) when the counting of votes will take place and poll results for the five states will be finally declared.
