Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister E.V.K.S Elangovan was sworn in as the Erode East MLA today after his landslide victory in the bypoll. Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker, M. Appavu administered his oath of office, reported news agency IANS.


His son, the sitting legislator in Erode East, passed away, forcing the by-election. On January 4, he had a cardiac arrest and passed away. Elangovan defeated K.S. Thennarasu of the AIADMK by a margin of 66,087 votes in the Erode East by-election.


EVKS Elangovan paid floral tributes to his son Thirumakan Eevera in the Congress legislators' chamber in the Legislative Assembly before taking charge. The seasoned politician hailed M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and credited his win to him.

Azlagiri, Congress Assembly Committee President Selvab Perundagai, Madhyamukhya Party Secretary Durai Vaiko, Vimithya Siruthaal Party President Thol. Thirumavalavan, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India K. Balakrishnan, Mutharasan of the Communist Party of India, and others were present during the ceremony.


EVKS Elangovan has re-entered the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly after 38 years.


With this win, the DMK and Congress front received a much-needed boost from Elangovan's enormous win for its foray into the general election campaign for 2024.
