Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amidst fervent chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, addressed a rally in Nalbari, Assam, and asked people to switch on their mobile lights as the ‘Surya Tilak’ ritual being performed for Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. At noon, the Sun’s rays were directed to fall precisely on the forehead of Ram Lalla. Earlier in the morning, ‘Divya Abhisheka’ of Lord Ram’s idol was performed.
Referring to the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, PM Modi stated, “Today is also the historic occasion of Ram Navami. After a wait of 500 years, Lord Ram has finally been seated in his grand temple, and in just a few minutes from now, his birth anniversary will be celebrated in the Ram temple in the holy city of Ayodhya by applying ‘Survya Tilak’ to Lord Ram”.
At noon on Ram Navami today, on Wednesday, the Sun’s rays were directed to fall exactly on the forehead of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, marking the ‘Surya Tilak’ of the deity. This remarkable phenomenon was made possible by an intricate mechanism involving mirrors and lenses. It is the first Ram Navami celebration since the consecration of the Ram idol at the new temple, inaugurated by PM Modi on January 22.
The ‘Surya Tilak’ mechanism, a testament to cutting-edge scientific expertise, involved a 5.8 centimetre beam of light illuminating the deity’s forehead. A team of esteemed Indian scientists, stationed at Ram Temple, meticulously orchestrated the event. For approximately, 3 to 3.5 minutes starting at 12 noon, sunlight was precisely directed onto Lord Ram’s forehead.

Commissioned by the temple trust, scientists from a leading government institution devised a sophisticated apparatus consisting of mirrors and lenses, officially called the ‘Surya Tilak’ mechanism.
While similar mechanisms exist in some Jain temples, and at the Sun Temple at Konark, each engineered differently, the ‘Surya Tilak, at Ayodhya Ram Mandir stands as a unique manifestation of innovation by science combined with religious reverence.
