The Congress party in Punjab is likely to get around 20 seats, while AAP looks to sweep the election with victory in more than 70 constituencies, as per the counting so far.

Punjab will be the second state after Delhi where AAP will form a government. Right through the polls AAP had been the favourite to win the election. All exit polls including the ABP-CVoter had predicted a landslide victory for the Aam Admi Party.

In the assembly elections held in 2017, the Congress party had securing 77 seats and formed the government under Capt Amarinder Singh, who left the party last year and floated his own political party, Punjab Lok Congress.

Election in Punjab for the 117-member assembly was held in a single phase on February 20. Nearly 72 per cent vote was cast during the polling, which is marginally lower than the 77.4 per cent recorded in the 2017 assembly election. The total number of candidates fighting the assembly election was 1,304, which is the highest ever.
