New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday claimed that former First Lady of the United States Melania Trump had told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that she wanted to see Delhi government schools during the Trumps' India visit in February 2020.

Addressing a rally in Rudhauli in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district, Kejriwal said, "She told Modiji in Delhi, I'll go to see Kejriwal's schools. She travels a lot across the globe, yet she has never made a request to see schools in any other country."

"Modi tried very hard to persuade her to see BJP schools, Yogi’s schools, Madhya Pradesh schools. But she said she will only see Kejriwal’s schools," Kejriwal said at the rally.

"We felt honoured. The wife of the world’s most powerful man came to see our school. She spent an hour, met students, and danced with them too. It is a big thing. We must have done something good," he further said.

Former US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania visited India in late February 2020 and was welcomed by a large-scale event called 'Namaste Trump' in Gujarat. After visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra, the Trumps were hosted in the national capital in the last leg of the tour. Melania had attended a "Happiness Class" at a Delhi government school in Moti Bagh area of the capital.

Targeting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Kejriwal said that government schools in Delhi had elevators, swimming pools and asked the crowd "how many schools did Yogi ji make in Uttar Pradesh in the last five years". "Not a single school in the whole of UP," he said.

Last week, around 12,000 smart classrooms were inaugurated in 240 government schools that received other infrastructure like designer desks, libraries, multipurpose halls among others.

The remarks by Kejriwal is AAP's latest poll pitch to project the development work done by the government in Delhi in the field of education.
