Elections 2023: The northeastern states of Meghalaya and Nagaland will today get their new government after the assembly polls concluded in the states recently. Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's Neiphiu Rio and National People's Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma will on Tuesday take oath as the Chief Ministers of Nagaland and Meghalaya respectively.
The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national President JP Nadda, reported ANI.
Nagaland
Nagaland’s longest-serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio will be assuming the office for a record fifth consecutive term after a big win in the polls. Rio on Saturday tendered his resignation as Chief Minister of Nagaland to Governor La Ganesan and staked claim to form the new government in the state.
The pre-poll alliance of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and BJP in Nagaland had secured a total of 37 out of 60 seats.
Rio retained the Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency, defeating Seyievilie Sachu of the Congress by a mammoth margin of 15,824 votes. He garnered a total of 17,045 votes, which is 92.87 per cent of the total votes polled in the seat, as per ANI’s report.
Apart from this, Nagaland made history by electing its first women legislators in its 60 years of statehood. The state, which has had 13 Assemblies so far, never had a woman MLA before Thursday's result.
The two elected women lawmakers, Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the ruling NDPP defeated the sitting MLAs in Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats respectively.
The Northeast state saw a triangular contest as Congress and CPIM, which have been arch rivals for years, stitched a pre-poll alliance to defeat the ruling BJP.
Meghalaya
The coalition backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a majority of the seats in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by the National People's Party (NPP) has 32 MLAs. The coalition is led by Conrad Sangma, and will form the government for the second consecutive term in the state. The BJP is an ally of the MDA, and has been allotted a berth in the new ministry, a PTI report said.
NPP has won 26 out of a total of 60 seats. It will take eight cabinet berths, BJP will get a single berth, United Democratic Party (UDP) will get two berths, and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) will get one berth.
In Meghalaya, the NPP-led alliance, with the support of 45 MLAs two of the BJP has staked claim to form the government in the state.
Among the allies, the eight cabinet berths will go to the NPP, two to the United Democratic Party (UDP) and one each for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP).
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Raj Bhawan in Shillong where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be present, ANI mentioned in the report.
