Voting for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 concluded on Monday across all 49 parliamentary constituencies spanning eight states and Union Territories. Additionally, polling ended on 35 Assembly constituencies in Odisha for the Legislative Assembly. By 5 PM, the voter turnout stood at 56.68 per cent for the fifth phase of elections. The states and Union Territories involved in the fifth phase were Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Notable cities like Mumbai, Amethi, Thane, and Lucknow witnessed voting, areas historically known for lower voter turnout.
Polling began at 7 AM and concluded at 6 PM across constituencies. Approximately 9.47 lakh polling officials were deployed to maintain law and order and ensure fair polling.
To ensure a seamless voting experience and the safety of the voters, polling stations were equipped with necessary amenities such as shade, drinking water, ramps, and toilets. Special arrangements were made to combat hot weather conditions.
A total of over 8.95 crore registered voters, comprising 4.69 crore males, 4.26 crore females, and 5409 third-gender electors, were eligible to cast their ballots.
Among the eligible voters in Phase 5, 24,792 were above 100 years old, over 7.81 lakh were aged 85+, and 7.03 lakh were Persons with Disabilities (PwD), who had the option to vote from home.
A total of 2.68 crore voters were supposed to determine the fate of 144 candidates contesting in the fifth phase. Notable candidates include Union Minister Rajnath Singh, seeking his fourth term from Lucknow, and Smriti Irani, contesting from Amethi against Congress stalwart KL Sharma.
