Party spokesperson Surjewala on Saturday evening confirmed that party workers in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had urged Gandhi to contest Lok Sabha from these states. He said a final decision has not been taken on the matter. He, however, emphasised that Amethi has been Gandhi’s bastion and will remain so.
In an attacking tweet, Textiles Minister Irani said that since people of Amethi have driven Rahul Gandhi out, now he is staging a call from Kerala. She used hashtag #BhaagRahulBhaag in her tweet.
BJP has fielded Irani from Rahul Gandhi’s turf Amethi. In 2014, Irani contested unsuccessfully against the Gandhi scion but managed to leave an impact as she managed to put up a good fight against Rahul in the traditional Congress seat. She lost with more than 1 lakh votes.
With hashtag #BhaagSmritiBhaag, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala reminded Irani of her debacle in the previous parliamentary polls. He said Irani has been rejected by people in Chandni Chowk and people of Amethi also drove her out, yet she managed to become a Rajya Sabha member despite her defeats. He said Amethi is ready to give Irani a hattrick of defeat.
Reports on Saturday suggested that the Congress in Kerala has proposed Gandhi’s name for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. Even party MLC Deepak Singh while talking to ABP News said Rahul will contest 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Wayanad constituency in Kerala, besides fighting from Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh.
