Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Thursday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not accepting the invitation to debate with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The Wayand MP on May 11 had accepted the invitation to a public debate on the key Lok Sabha election issues. In reference to this, Jairam Ramesh re-posted Rahul Gandhi's acceptance letter on X and asked the PM to not be scared of the debate.

"Day 5 of Rahul Gandhi’s letter accepting an invitation to debate the Prime Minister. The 56-inch chest has not yet mustered the courage to accept the invite," Jairam Ramesh wrote on X, adding "#DaroMat".

Rahul Gandhi, Congress's Raebareli candidate had accepted the debate invitation after some retired justices wrote to both, the Gandhi scion and PM Modi, inviting them to a public platform to debate on election issues. He also stated that the country expects PM Modi to participate in it.

However, BJP turned down th debate invitation initially, reasoning that Rahul Gandhi did not possess the required credentials even within his party, as a result of which the PM had no reason to debate with him.

Instead, BJP's Karnataka leader Tejaswi Surya nominated the saffron party's Yuva Morcha Vice President Abhinav Prakash to debate with Rahul Gandhi.

"Dear Rahul Gandhi Ji, BJP has deputed Abhinav Prakash, National Vice President of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha, as a BJYM's representative for the upcoming debate," Surya wrote in a letter.
