New Delhi: The Indian government on Tuesday evening cancelled the visa of the Bangladeshi actor Ferdous Ahmed after he campaigned for a Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha candidate in Bengal. The government has also asked him to leave the country and blacklisted him, a Home Ministry statement said. "After receiving a report from the Bureau of Immigration regarding visa violations committed by Bangladesh national Ferdous Ahmed, MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) has cancelled his business visa and issued him a leave India notice. He also has been blacklisted. FRRO Kolkata has been directed to ensure compliance of these orders," the statement said. The action comes two days after Ahmed campaigned for Trinamool's Raiganj candidateKanaia Lal Agarwal, who faces stiff competition from Congress's Deepa Dasmunshi and CPI-M's Mohammad Salim. Calling Kolkata his second home, the actor on Facebook said, "I don't have any right to talk about the politics of India. Kolkata is my second home. I have made a lot of movies in Kolkata hence I have a lot of friends, colleagues and fans there. I was basically present there on a request. Whoever the people want to vote for is their personal choice. My speech has been explained incorrectly in the media." Taking cognizance of the matter, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the Siliguri district administration over a foreign national being permitted to campaign for a political party. According to reports, Bangladesh High Commissioner on Tuesday afternoon directed Ferdous Ahmed to return to his country immediately. Raiganj is the former bastion of the Congress and its leader Priya Ranjan Das Munshi. Unlike the other seven north Bengal seats, Raiganj has a four-cornered contest where Trinamul’s Kanaialal Agarwal is pitted against Das Munshi’s wife and Congress candidate Deepa, outgoing CPM MP Mohammad Salim, and Debasree Chaudhuri of the BJP. Raiganj has over 52 per cent minority votes. These have traditionally been split between the CPM and the Congress. There are 14 candidates including five Independents in the fray in the constituency, which will go to vote on April 18 in the second phase. There are a total 15.99 lakh voters in the constituency. BJP president Amit Shah at a rally recently had raked up the issue of Bangladesi immigrants entering India illegally and the TMC government resorting to minority appeasement.
