New Delhi: In Tamil Nadu, the DMK and AIADMK are battling each other first time in the absence of their legendary leaders M Karunanidhi and J Jayalalithaa, in both the Lok Sabha elections and the assembly bypolls.


In Tamil Nadu, which sends 39 MPs to the Lok Sabha, elections were held on 38 seats. The result of 22 bypolls are also expected today.

Out of the 543 Lok Sabha seats, elections were held in 542 constituencies as the EC had cancelled polls to the Vellore constituency on the ground of excessive use of money power.

As per the early trends, from Sivaganga constituency in the state, Congress candidate Karti Chidambaram is leading.

The AIADMK which went to 2014 Lok Sabha polls alone, has stitched a pre-poll alliance with BJP this time, and other regional parties.  While the DMK’s partners include the Indian National Congress, and the left parties- the CPI and CPM along with three more regional parties.

The constituencies which went to poll included Tiruvallur, Chennai North, Chennai South, Chennai Central, Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram, Arakkonam, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Arani, Viluppuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukkudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.
