The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday made a historic comeback to power in Delhi after a hiatus of 27 years, leading in 48 seats and defeating Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who managed to clinch only 22 seats.
The BJP's victory was made even more significant as several AAP stalwarts, including party convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain and Avadh Ojha lost their seats in a major setback for the party.
The BJP is now set to form the government in Delhi with speculations rife regarding the CM pick from the saffron party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address BJP workers from the party's national headquarters in New Delhi.
With the BJP's return to the capital, all eyes are on the party's promises made during the poll campaign — health insurance, free electricity, jobs and schemes for women.
The BJP has promised free water supply to all the people in the national capital. The party also promised free education - from pre-school to post-graduate degrees, government jobs and clean Yamuna in three years.
The party's manifesto also included implementing Ayushman Bharat scheme and ownership rights in 1,700 unauthorised colonies and life insurance to auto and taxi drivers.
Will 200 Units Of Free Electricity Continue In Delhi?
During the election campaign, AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, attacked the BJP saying that the saffron party will snatch the benefits given to the people, including free electricity and free education.
Kejriwal, on the other hand, had announced, that Delhi government’s flagship power and water subsidies would be extended in the capital if AAP returns to power.
However, the BJP manifesto, which promises clean water, subsidised LPG and free healthcare, has not made any mention of free electricity.
"We will provide free electricity to poor households under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana," the party's manifesto said.
Though the BJP has not promised to continue 200 units of free electricity in Delhi after coming into power, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that the BJP will not stop any of the welfare schemes running in Delhi.
"A serious lie is being spread in Delhi to influence the elections. A staff in my bungalow said that they are getting repeated phone calls saying that when BJP comes to power the free schemes will be stopped....I have never seen such low level electioneering in my public life. I want to make it clear that when the BJP comes to power, all welfare schemes will continue,” Amit Shah said.
