AAP party's candidate Kuldeep Kumar broke down after the results of the Chandigarh Mayoral Poll were declared on Tuesday. The BJP won the Chandigarh Mayor elections as it secured 16 votes, whereas AAP got 12 votes following which the saffron party's candidate Manoj Sonkar was declared as Chandigarh's new mayor. BJP's candidate Rajinder Kumar has been elected as Deputy Mayor after Congress and AAP councillors refused to cast votes in the election for Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
After Monoj Sonkar won the election, a ruckus broke out in the House as the Congress and AAP councillors accused the BJP of not following the due electoral process.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha said during a press conference that the Chandigarh mayor election was not only unconstitutional but it was treason. He slammed the alleged illegality which was witnessed in the polls as "treason".
He also said that it was the first time in Chandigarh mayor elections that 8 votes out of 36 were called invalid. The Congress and AAP alliance had to secure 20 votes, but since 8 of their votes were considered invalid they managed to secure only 12 votes, which caused their defeat.
Raghav also mentioned that not a single vote of BJP was declared invalid.
Former Congress MP Pawan Kumar Bansal said that the AAP and Congress candidates were not allowed to see the ballot papers and the presiding officer declared the BJP candidate as the winner right away. Subsequently, BJP members rushed to the table and tore off all the ballot papers.
Punjab CM and AAP leader Bhagwat Mann said that "today will be remembered as a black day in India's democracy as today our nation's constitution was shredded"
