Guwahati: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday made a jibe at senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the latter contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi Lok Sabha constituency.
CM Himanta was reacting to a video of Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in which the former Union minister can be heard saying: "People have realised that they committed a mistake in 2019 and now, want Rahul Gandhi to return to the constituency."
CM Himanta said that the politicians may commit a mistake, but the people don’t. He said that the people of Amethi did not commit a mistake by voting Rahul Gandhi out from the constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. “Speaking from my heart: People do not make mistakes; we, politicians, do wrong. The people of Amethi did not make a mistake; the so-called leader did not serve them well, and so they voted him out,” Chief Minister Sarma wrote on X.
Chief Minister Himanta further said that the leaders reform themselves and return to the voters with humility, apologising for their past mistakes. Sometimes they are forgiven, sometimes they aren't. He added that politics is all about humility and not arrogance.
“Leaders reform themselves and come before the electorate with humility again, apologising for past mistakes. Sometimes people forgive, sometimes not. Politics is all about humility, not arrogance,” the Chief Minister added in his post on X.
Jairam Ramesh said that the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Indian National Congress (INC), the INC President, and Rahul Gandhi himself will decide whether to contest the 2024 general elections from Amethi or not.
Earlier on Monday, sitting MP from Amethi and Union Minister Smriti Irani, while speaking to the media during a visit to her constituency, said that those who once believed Amethi to be their stronghold but did not serve its people were welcomed by empty streets.
