Election Commission on Saturday announced the election schedule for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 and state assembly elections 2024. As per the schedule released by the EC, Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Elections 2024 will be held on April 19, 2024 during phase 1. Through this election, the northeastern state will elect 60 members to the state's assembly as the tenure of the current government is scheduled to end soon.
The election should be completed before June 6 2024 and the date of counting has been set for June 4, 2024.
The state is currently governed by the Bhartiya Janata Party with Pema Khandu as the Chief Minister of the state. BJP holds 41 seats in the state, ruling 11 constituencies while the remaining seats were secured by Janata Dal (United), Congress, National People's Party (NPP), and the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA).
Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Elections 2019 Recap
In April 2019, Arunachal held its 17th Legislative Assembly elections witnessed the BJP sweeping the state securing a majority with 41 states. Pema Khandu, son of former CM Pradesh Dorjee Khandu, was sworn in as the state's CM on May 29, 2019.
Despite being a 60-member constituency, the assembly polls in Arunachal were conducted for only 57 seats as three BJP candidates were declared unopposed.
Apart from the 41 seats won by the BJP, the Janata Dal(United) won seven seats, the NPP secured five seats, and the Congress won four seats. The PPA however just secured one seat while the independents won two seats.
Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Polls 2019 Stats
The previous state elections witnessed a voter turnout of 82.11 percent. Out of the total 803563 electors, a total of 463775 belonged to Arunachal West and 339788 belonged to Arunachal East.
The total number of votes recorded was 659766 out of which 364047 belonged to Arunachal West and 295719 belonged to Arunachal East. A total of 644627 votes were considered to be valid.
Out of the votes cast, 300789 were male, 326188 were female, and 5314 belonged to the service category. A total of 32789 were cast through postal votes out of which 7675 votes were rejected. 7464 NOTA votes were cast in Arunachal.
Arunachal had 2202 polling stations with an average of 365 electors per polling station. Out of the total polling stations, 1297 were located in Arunachal West and 905 in Arunachal East.
BJP Candidates For Arunachal Assembly Polls 2024
BJP on March 13 declared the candidates list for the Arunachal Pradesh elections 2024, fielding CM Pema Khandu from the Mukto (ST) assembly constituency.
Arunachal BJP Chief Biyuram Wahge has been fielded from the Pakke-Kessang (ST) seat while Deputy CM Chowna Mein will contest from the Chowkhan (ST) seat.
Apart from this, the Urban Development Minister Kamlun Mossang will fight from Miao (ST), Public Health Engineering and Water SupplyMinister Wangki Lowang from Namsang (ST), and Rural Works and Science and Technology Minister Honchun Ngandam from Pongchao-Wakka (ST).
