New Delhi: Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Friday came out in support of Gautam Gambhir in the AAP-BJP pamphlet war.  AAP's East Delhi candidate Atishi yesterday broke down while reading a pamphlet containing "obscene and scurrilous " remarks against her, that she alleged has been distributed in the constituency by her BJP rival Gautam Gambhir, a charge vigorously denied by the cricketer-turned-politician.

In a tweet this morning, Singh said he was shocked to note about the events that transpired yesterday but asserted Gambhir wouldn't resort to anything like this to win elections. "I know him (Gautam Gambhir) well and he can never talk ill for any woman Whether he wins or loses is another matter but the man is above all this," he said while staunchly defending his former teammate who won plaudits for his scintillating 97 in 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka.

Gambhir on Friday sent a defamation notice to Atishi for the allegations levelled against him.

Speaking to ABP News, the BJP leader said, "Because of individuals like Kejriwal people do not want to enter politics. From day 1 I told our workers that we will not resort to  negative politics.  You can have a look at my 17 days of canvassing. We can't stoop to the levels AAP has fallen to. I have said in the past that I am not here to for power but to serve the people. If allegations are proved against me I will make Kejriwal prepare my resignation letter which I will sign openly in public."

As the controversy gained national attention, Gambhir on Thursday tweeted, "I abhor your act of outraging a woman's modesty @ArvindKejriwal and that too your own colleague. And all this for winning elections? U r filth Mr CM and someone needs ur very own jhaadu to clean ur dirty mind(sic)."

"My Challenge no.2 @ArvindKejriwal @AtishiAAP I declare that if its proven that I did it, I will withdraw my candidature right now. If not, will u quit politics?(sic)", he said in another tweet.

Election in Delhi is slated to be held on May 12 on all seven Lok Sabha seats. Results will be declared on May 23.
