Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa got a major relief after the results of the Karnataka bypolls, as he could retain the majority in the house, on Monday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party clinched three seats in the by-elections and was leading on nine, as per the latest figures.
Yediyurappa on Monday asserted that he would give a stable and pro-development government for the next three-and-half years - the remainder of his term.
‘Voters have given their verdict and the results are out.’
Now we have to focus on the development of the state.
‘I will give a good administration in the next three-and- half years with the help of our ministers and MLAs,’ an upbeat Chief Minister told reporters here.
‘I am happy that people have given a very good verdict. Now, without any problem we can give a pro-people and a stable government,’ says Karnataka CM yeddiyurappa as BJP looks set to attain majority.
The ruling BJP on Monday bagged four seats and was leading in eight others as the B S Yediyurappa-led government appeared on course to sweep the bypolls in 15 constituencies and retain a majority.
The opposition Congress and JDS faced a huge setback.
The Congress, which had won 12 of those 15 seats in the previous election, was leading only in two segments -- Hunsur and Shivajinagar.
‘Today, the people of Karnataka have assured that Congress and JDS will not be able to betray the people there. This is a message to all the states of the country that if someone goes against the mandate, cheats the public, then the public will punish him as soon as he gets the first opportunity,’said PM Modi, while addressing a rally in the poll-bound state of Jharkhand.
He said that now the people have chosen a stable and strong government for themselves, he added.
BJP candidate from Yellapur Arabail Shivaram Hebbar became the first candidate to register a victory in the bypolls to 15 assembly constituencies in Karnataka, for which the counting is underway on Monday.
Hebbar defeated Congress' Bhimanna Naik by a margin of over 31,000 votes, poll officials said, adding that official announcement was awaited.
A two-time Congress MLA from Yellapur, Hebbar was among 13 disqualified MLA whom the BJP had given ticket to contest the bypoll as party candidate.
Trends available so far showed Congress leading in two (Shivajinagar and Hunsur), while JD(S) and an independent candidate were ahead in Yeshwanthpura and Hoskote constituencies respectively.
As BJP has taken a good lead in the bypoll trends, Congress has conceded its defeat. Senior party leader DK Shivakaumar said that people have accepted ‘defectors’, while referring to the disqualified MLAs fielded by the BJP.
‘We have to agree with the mandate of the voters of these 15 constituencies. People have accepted the defectors. We have accepted defeat, I don't think we have to be disheartened,’ he said.
Candidates of Congress, JDS who are leading:
Congress nominees H P Manjunath (Hunsur) and Rizwan Arshad (Shivajinagar) were leading; JD(S)' B L Devaraj and Javarayi Gowda were ahead in K R Pete and Yeshwanthpura respectively.

Karnataka by-polls result of 15 Assembly segments will be declared on Monday as the counting and fate of four-month-old B.S. Yeddyurappa government would be decided as the ruling BJP is short of a majority in the 224-member house.
BJP needs to win at least six seats to retain its majority in the house as the party has currently 105 MLAs including an independent MLA in the Assembly. The Congress is also eyeing the outcome as it leaders are indicating a tie up with the JD-S again.
Before Yeddyurappa came to power the Congress-JD-S alliance government fell after the resignation of 14 Congress and three JD-S MLAs. All the rebel MLAS were disqualified by the previous Speaker and now the bypolls are being held in 15 seats as two seats are under litigation in the High Court.
BJP is upbeat and local exit polls in Karnataka predicted that the ruling BJP will win the majority of Thursday's by-elections in 15 Assembly segments. Power TV, a Kannada news channel, has estimated a minimum of eight and a maximum of 12 Assembly seats for the BJP. For Congress, it predicted three to six wins in the by-elections and 0 to two seats for Janata Dal (Secular).
Ahead of counting of votes in the crucial byelections to 15 assembly constituencies on December 9, BJP leaders in Karnataka on Sunday oozed confidence about their party winning a majority of seats.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said the party would win at least 13 of the 15 seats, while the opposition Congress and JD(S) would have to be content with just one each.
We will win at least 13 seats. The Congress and JD(S) may win one seat each. Our party will carry out overall development of the state in the next three-and-half years, Yediyurappa told reporters here.
The Chief Minister said he was optimistic that the Congress and JD(S) would cooperate in helping him run a smooth administration.
After the government completes its term, BJP will win at least 150 seats in the next assembly elections and come to power again, while Congress will continue to remain in the opposition, he said.
BJP state chief Nalin Kumar Kateel was even more optimistic, saying the party would win all the 15 seats.
We will win all the 15 seats in the byelection. I have travelled through all constituencies and seen the enthusiasm of our workers and voters, he told reporters in Hubballi.
The outcome of the bypoll is crucial for BJP, which needs to win at least six seats to remain in a majority.
The Chief Minister had won the July 29 confidence motion after the effective strength of the 225-member assembly (including the Speaker, who has a casting vote) came down to 208 and the majority mark to 105, equivalent of BJP's current strength, following the disqualifications.
The assembly will still have two vacant seats, where bypolls were not due to pending litigations in high court.
Currently BJP has 105 MLAs (including an independent), the Congress 66 and the JD(S) 34. Besides, there is one BSP member, a nominated MLA and the Speaker.
The bypolls were held to fill the vacancies caused by disqualification of 17 rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs, whose revolt led to the collapse of the H D Kumaraswamy led coalition government in July and paved the way for BJP to come to power.
BJP had fielded 13 of the 16 disqualified legislators, who joined the party after the Supreme Court allowed them to contest the bypolls, as its candidates from their constituencies from where they had won the 2018 assembly elections on Congress and JD(S) tickets.
Among 15 constituencies which went to the bypolls, 12 are held by Congress and three by JD(S).
