UPSC: Assam's Mayur Hazarika Secures Fifth Rank, Calls Jaishankar His Inspiration

Mayur Hazarika, who is engaged with the national health mission in Assam, said his first preference will be joining the Indian Foreign Service.

Guwahati: Assam's Mayur Hazarika has secured the fifth rank in the UPSC civil services examination, the results of which were declared on Tuesday. Hazarika, a resident of Tezpur in Assam's Sonitpur district, is a doctor by profession.

Speaking to ABP Live, Hazarika, who is employed as a medical officer with the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, said he was inspired by Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar.

"I did not prepare for the Civil Services examination in a detailed manner. Initially, I started my preparations in the first part of 2021 and prepared fully by the end of the year," he said.

"I am inspired by my parents who took good care of me from my childhood and helped me achieve this feat. I am also very inspired by our Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar. My first preference would be Indian Foreign Service (IFS)," Hazarika further said.

Hazarika, who completed his MBBS degree from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, said he attempted the Civil Services examination as public service provides a wide field of opportunity to serve not only the individual but also the society and country at a larger level.

"As my first preference is IFS, it goes down to serving my country at the highest level and that is what made me attempt the examination," he said.

Hazarika completed his Higher Secondary (HS) from Ramanujan Junior College, Nagaon, and did his schooling from Don Bosco School. He was a rank holder in both the HSLC and HS examinations.

Asked if he is active on social media, Hazarika said, "All technologies have their pros and cons. I think that it has a great advantage in the point of view that it provides us with so much information, but at the same time, we should be careful about not getting addicted to it, and also be very careful about what we are consuming on social media."

As many as 933 candidates, 613 men and 320 women, qualified the civil services examination.

Ishita Kishore topped the civil services examination 2022 while Garima Lohia and Uma Harathi N secured the second and third ranks respectively.
