Over 1 Lakh Students Failed In Class 9 In Delhi Govt Schools: RTI Report

New Delhi: More than one lakh students in the ninth grade at Delhi government schools failed their annual examinations for the academic session 2023-24. Similarly, over 46,000 eighth-grade and 50,000 eleventh-grade students could not pass their exams, as reported by news agency PTI. This information was disclosed by the Delhi Directorate of Education (DDE) in response to an RTI application.

Delhi has 1,050 government schools and 37 Dr. BR Ambedkar Schools of Specialised Excellence. The data revealed that 1,01,331 ninth-grade students failed in the academic session 2023-24, compared to 88,409 in 2022-23, 28,531 in 2021-22, and 31,540 in 2020-21.

For the eleventh grade, 51,914 students failed in 2023-24, 54,755 in 2022-23, 7,246 in 2021-22, and only 2,169 in 2020-21. Additionally, 46,622 eighth-grade students failed in 2023-24 following the cancellation of the 'no-detention policy' under the Right to Education Act.

An official of the Delhi Education Department told PTI-Bhasha on the condition of anonymity, "Under the new 'Promotion Policy' of the Delhi government, if the students of class V to VIII fail in the annual examination, they will not be promoted to the next class. But they will get another chance to improve their performance within two months through re-examination, he added.

To pass the re-examination, students must secure at least 25 percent marks in each subject; otherwise, they will be classified as 'repeaters' and remain in the same class until the next session.

Delhi Govt Keeps Transfer Orders Of 5,000 School Teachers

On the orders of Lt. Governor V.K. Saxena, the Delhi government directed on July 8 that the transfer of 5,000 school teachers, who have been posted in the same school for more than 10 years, be put on hold. Lt. Governor Saxena instructed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to keep the transfer orders, issued last week, in abeyance as an interim measure.

This decision followed a meeting between the Lt. Governor and a delegation of Delhi BJP leaders and teachers' representatives. Addressing a press conference, Delhi Education Minister Ms. Atishi alleged a conspiracy by the BJP behind the transfer orders. She also congratulated the people of Delhi on the orders being withdrawn.
