Berhampur: A 20-year-old woman from Odisha's Ganjam district, who allegedly set herself on fire due to mistreatment by her father and stepmother, succumbed to her injuries during treatment on Tuesday, news agency PTI quoted police as saying.
Rani Pradhan, a final-year undergraduate student from Kukudakhandi village, Berhampur Sadar police station area, doused herself in petrol and set herself ablaze near the Panchayat Samity office on Monday afternoon.
According to Superintendent of Police Sarvana Vivek M, Rani sustained 90% burn injuries and was being treated at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where she passed away.
Preliminary investigations suggest that she resorted to this drastic step following ongoing harassment by her father and stepmother. Rani’s mother passed away when she was just three, after which her father remarried and had a son with his new wife.
"We have detained her father for questioning, and further details will emerge after interrogating him and other family members," the SP stated.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death as part of their ongoing investigation.
Student Found Dead Under Suspicious Circumstances In Shahjahanpur
A second-year MBBS student was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a private medical college in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district on Sunday, police said. Authorities are investigating whether it was a suicide or if foul play was involved.
The student, identified as Kushagra Pratap Singh, was discovered lying in a pool of blood outside his hostel room early in the morning. Kushagra, originally from Gorakhpur, was enrolled at the private medical college near Bareilly Road.
"Upon inspection, we found that his room was on the ground floor, and no one else was around. It appears he either fell from the third floor or was pushed. We are looking into whether this was a suicide or if foul play was involved," said Rajesh Yash, the Superintendent of Police.
